Thousands of Canadians use walkers to support their mobility. While it is common to see elderly individuals use walkers, people of all ages use them for a variety of reasons. There are a lot of situations why you may need a walker. You can’t stand on one or both of your legs. You could be battling fatigue. You have poor balance. Or you may be recovering from some form of medical treatment or surgery. For example, a hip replacement or knee surgery.
If you need a walker, consider the follow 5 things when comparing your purchase options:
How you will use your walker the most will dictate the type of walker that is best suited for your needs. For example, if you are mainly using it to get around the house, you use a different model or style than if you intended to use it outdoors daily.
So, what is your main purpose for the walker? To assist you when making transition to bed or when using the toilet? For additional support only when you need it? Or will you need to walker all the time?
Walkers should be fitted to each individual. You’ll need to choose a walker model that meets your height requirements. You will also need to adjust the width so you can clearly step into the walker and sit down when needed. Speaking of sitting, it is essential you choose a seat height that allows you to easily sit and stand.
Before you choose a walker and bring it home, you need to have an understanding of the spacing in your home. Will the walker be able to fit through the doorways? Is there enough space in your home for you to move around the furniture? Choose a walker size with these types of things in mind. You may need to do a little reorganizing of furniture to ensure you have enough clearance to move around.
Another thing you will need to consider is flooring. Do you have carpet, hardwood, laminate or tile? This can impact the type of wheels and grip used on your walker.
How will you get around with your walker? Will you need one that you can fold up and put in the trunk of your car? Do you need a lightweight model, so you can bring it up the stairs? Is the walker suitable if you use public transportation?
