Stairlifts are increasingly in popularity. They have never been more common in homes across Ontario. They are an effective mobility device that can help seniors or those with mobility issues safely get up and down the stairs. But, like any other important device in your home, you need to take proper care and maintenance, or you could run into issues with your lift. Always follow the recommended cleaning and maintenance plan outlined in your stairlift model manual.

Protect your investment and get more out of your stairlift by following these maintenance and clearing tips:

How To Clean Your Stairlift

Keeping your stairlift clean is an important step to its longevity and proper functioning. The good news is cleaning your stairlift is a rather simple process. Here are some tips to keep your stair lift clean:

  • Keep the track clear: Regularly check the stairlift track to ensure there is no debris. Track obstructions could inhibit operations. Its a good idea to check the track daily, especially if you have pets or kids in the home.
  • Clean the track regularly: Once you see the track is clear, its time to clean it. Fortunately, it is a simple process. Use a duster or damp cloth and wipe down the track. Do not use a wet cloth. Wipe down the rest of the seat and other parts at the same time. It is recommended to do this on a weekly basis.
  • Vacuum around the lift: Regularly vacuum the stairs, rails, and in behind the stairlift on a regular basis. This will eliminate dust from collecting on mechanical components. If you have pets, this is even more important. Vacuum weekly to ensure pet hair does not get into the stairlift.

Stairlift Maintenance Tips

Cleaning is step one of keeping your stairlift in top shape. Regular maintenance is the other thing that will help you get the most out of your lift. Follow these maintenance tips:

  • Never unplug your stairlift: This even goes for when you are cleaning it. Unplugging it could actually have a negative impact on the battery. Unplugging it too often could damage the battery.
  • Lubricate the track: A well lubricated track will keep your stairlift operating smoothly. It is recommended to lubricate it once every three months. Make sure to use the recommended lubricant from the manufacturer.
  • Use it even when not required: Even if your stairlift is not currently in use, run it up and down the stair a few times per week to keep it operational and working fine. Make sure it is parked properly at the top or bottom of the stairs so unnecessary stress is not placed on the unit.
  • Check all moving parts: Do a visual and manual inspection of all the moving parts on your stairlift. Make sure everything moves and functions as it is supposed to.
  • Check all screws and bolts: Check all bolts and screws to ensure they are not coming loose. Tighten if necessary. If you notice a loose part you cannot fix, call a professional for assistance.
  • Get an annual inspection: Have a trusted professional inspect your stairlift on an annual basis. The inspection will ensure everything is in good working order. This becomes even more important if the stairlift is used a lot or if it has been in operations for a number of years. At any time, if you suspect there is an issue with how it works, call a professional to take a look at it.

Maintenance schedules and recommendations can vary based on the model. Refer to your stairlift handbook or give us a call if you have any questions about cleaning and maintenance requirements.
